Why Consider a Gas Boiler Replacement

Gas boilers are a heating staple in a lot of Irish homes and businesses. There are many reasons to install a gas boiler replacement in your home. To save energy, reduce carbon emissions, reduce monthly heating bills and for comfort and convenience (to name a few),

What is the Best Gas Boiler Replacement?

Heat pumps are a renewable heating source that can be a cost-efficient gas boiler replacement. Heat pumps derive their heat energy from the air, the ground or a water source. All MasterTherm heat pumps can work as a water heater, a central heating system and an air conditioner simultaneously.

Air heat pumps take the heat from the air, even if it isn’t warm outside. It then converts the heat into energy. This can then warm your water which can be pumped around your central heating systems.  Air to water heat pumps are the most accessible for everyone as they have the lowest installation cost.

Ground to water, or geothermal heating, gathers its heat energy from pipes deep underground. Geothermal heating functions better in extremely cold weather. This is because the pipes go down to below freezing temperatures. However, to install the pipes it is necessary to own a certain amount of space. You also need to undergo earthworks when installing your heat pump.

A water to water heat pump works similarly. By going deep into a water source below the freezing temperature where there is always heat. Water to water heat pumps requires a water source like a well or a lake.

Why You Really Need a Gas Boiler Replacement

The Climate Crisis

SEAI ( the Sustainable Energy Association of Ireland) released statistics on Ireland’s CO2 emissions. These statistics were alarming, as it was clear Ireland released nearly 60,000ktCO2 (kilotons of CO2 ) in 2020. This is a decline from 2018 when Ireland’s CO2 emissions were over 60,000ktCO2

CO2 emissions rise up and get trapped in the atmosphere and get trapped, causing a greenhouse effect. This is where the term greenhouse gas is derived from. Greenhouse gases come from the burning of fossil fuels.

When you use these fossil fuels to heat your home, your boiler uses a combustion chamber. This chamber releases gas and burns it repeatedly until your water is boiling. Similar to a giant, gas-powered kettle.

In 2020, 21% of all greenhouse gas emissions were from large companies (ETS emissions). 38.9% were from energy-related non-ETS (transport, heat and electricity).

Of that energy-related CO2, 40.8% was produced by heating. That’s over a third of our energy-related CO2, and around 16% of overall CO2 emissions.

If you add the ETS emissions and the overall heating emissions, that adds up to 37% of overall CO2 emissions.

Gas Boiler Installations Will be Banned

The Irish government has announced that by 2025, gas boiler installations will be banned. This is the government’s way of reducing fossil fuel consumption or heating.

Comfort

Gas boilers can be expensive to install and run consistently throughout the day.  You can remedy this by setting a timer or by manually switching it on and off throughout the day. With MasterTherm Heat Pump you can control the temperature of your home from an app on your phone or tablet. Not only that, but you can actually run your heat pump all day for a fraction of the cost.

Gas Boiler Replacement Gives Protection From Rising Gas Prices

Changing to a heat pump means that you do not have to purchase gas at rising prices anymore. While heat pumps run by using electricity, this is a tiny amount compared to gas. Luckily, you can source your electricity from a renewable source like the sun, wind or hydro.

Who Needs a Gas Boiler Replacement?

Industrial Heat Pumps

Emissions From Large Companies are a huge chunk of our greenhouse gas emissions. We can change that. Presently,

These gases fall under the ETS (Emissions Trading System). Large industries, electricity generators, and aviation all fall under this category. This is to reduce the largest chunk of CO2 emissions by 201% by 2025. The EU is monitoring these ETS emissions through credits. Each company can only use a limited amount of these credits a year.

So how will your industrial plant function with limited fossil fuels?

Pharmaceuticals, Food processing, the Cement and concrete industry, Medical supplies, Plastic and metal manufacturing and processing (the list is endless) all need heating and cooling systems. An industrial heat pump, or a recovery heat pump, is an incredibly reliable source for both. The heat is taken from the cooling system and converted into hot water. Then a control system decides whether to reuse the heat or reject it. If it is rejected then it is at the lowest possible temperature to maximise the cooling efficiency of the plant. Advances in technology allow full monitoring of heat pumps online. This enables commercial operators to have peace of mind with their equipment.

How Does a Gas Boiler Replacement Work in an Industrial Plant?

In an industrial plant, generally, a lot of water is heated by fossil fuels for production. This water then evaporates and is released into the environment to dissipate. A heat recovery heat pump not only works as a gas boiler replacement. It will also take that extra heat that is being released out into the environment and turn it into more energy. After that, it can be used to power the refrigeration system, or heat more water. This cycle will continue 24/7 and will save your business money and stress.

SEAI Grants for Better Energy Homes

SEAI is offering grants for your gas boiler replacement. These grants can cover half of your heat pump installation fee and will make the transition process that much easier. When considering the best option for your home or business, it is important you have all of the information. You can read about the term and conditions of the SEAI grants here. SEAI offer grant to all sorts of businesses and homes. It is their mission to create a world where we do not rely on fossil fuels to warm our homes. Though the heat pumps do use a small amount of electricity to run it is a minuscule amount.
