HVAC Service & Commissioning Technician

Role Overview

MasterTherm Ireland is seeking an HVAC Service & Commissioning Technician to join our growing technical and service team.

This is not a conventional maintenance-only position. The successful candidate will provide technical field support throughout the full lifecycle of MasterTherm commercial HVAC systems:

Installation Support → Pre-Commissioning → Commissioning → Handover → Technical Support → Servicing → Diagnostics → Optimisation

The role covers commercial heat pump systems and associated plant rooms, as well as commercial heat-recovery AHU and MHRV ventilation systems.

A major part of the role will involve working directly with mechanical and electrical contractors, providing installation guidance, checking systems are installed correctly and preparing them for commissioning.

The technician will then commission the equipment, confirm correct mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control operation, provide handover and training, and support systems throughout their operational life.

This position is suited to a technically minded HVAC professional who enjoys controls, commissioning, fault finding and understanding complete building-services systems.

Key Responsibilities

Installation & Pre-Commissioning

  • Support M&E contractors during installation by:
  • Reviewing drawings, schematics and equipment schedules;
  • Providing manufacturer installation guidance;
  • Checking heat pump positioning and installation;
  • Reviewing hydraulic connections, pumps, buffers and hydraulic separation;
  • Checking heating, cooling and DHW systems;
  • Reviewing sensors, valves, actuators and controls;
  • Checking AHU/MHRV installation and duct connections;
  • Reviewing heating/cooling coils and condensate drainage;
  • Checking electrical supplies and control wiring;
  • Supporting BMS integration;
  • Identifying installation issues before commissioning.

The role provides specialist manufacturer support and does not replace the appointed mechanical or electrical contractor.

Heat Pump Commissioning

Commission commercial heat pump and plant-room systems, including:

  • Initial start-up and controller configuration;
  • Single and cascade heat pump systems;
  • Compressor operation;
  • Flow rates and operating temperatures;
  • Heating and cooling parameters;
  • Weather compensation;
  • DHW operation;
  • Buffer temperature management;
  • Circulation pumps and control outputs;
  • Bivalent and hybrid heating systems;
  • Lead/lag and cascade operation;
  • Defrost operation;
  • Safety functions and alarms;
  • Remote monitoring;
  • Modbus and BACnet BMS communications;

Overall operation against the approved design and control strategy.

Commissioning should consider the complete heating and cooling system, not simply the heat pump itself.

AHU & Ventilation Commissioning

Commission commercial heat-recovery AHUs and MHRV systems, including:

  • Initial AHU start-up and controller configuration;
  • Supply and extract fan operation;
  • Setting and verifying design airflow rates;
  • Air balancing;
  • Fan speed and pressure control;
  • Constant airflow, constant pressure and demand-controlled operation;
  • CO₂-based ventilation control;
  • Temperature-control strategies;
  • Heat-recovery and bypass operation;
  • Dampers and actuators;
  • Heating and cooling coils;
  • Frost protection;
  • Supply-air temperature control;
  • Temperature, pressure and CO₂ sensors;
  • Filter monitoring;
  • Condensate management;
  • Alarms and operating schedules;
  • Remote monitoring;
  • Modbus/BACnet integration;

External signals and interlocks.

The technician should understand how ventilation systems respond to occupancy, CO₂ levels, airflow and temperature requirements.

Integrated HVAC Systems & Controls

Where MasterTherm heat pumps and AHUs operate together, the technician will commission them as one integrated HVAC system.

This includes understanding heat pump and AHU controls, heating and cooling demand, pumps and control valves, heating/cooling changeover, variable-speed pumps and fans, temperature/pressure/CO₂ sensors, weather compensation, DHW priority, bivalent systems, demand-controlled ventilation, remote monitoring, Modbus, BACnet, BMS integration, alarms and diagnostics.

The technician will regularly work with mechanical contractors, electrical contractors, BMS companies and consulting engineers.

Handover & Technical Support

Following commissioning, responsibilities include:

  • Completing commissioning reports;
  • Recording system operating parameters and airflow rates;
  • Confirming equipment serial numbers;
  • Setting up remote monitoring;
  • Providing operational training;
  • Demonstrating controls and user interfaces;
  • Explaining maintenance requirements;
  • Identifying outstanding installation issues.

Ongoing support may include telephone and remote technical support, reviewing system data, investigating alarms, remote diagnostics, troubleshooting hydraulic, airflow and control issues, BMS communication troubleshooting, adjusting system settings and determining when site attendance is required.

Where possible, issues should be diagnosed remotely before attending site.

Servicing & Preventative Maintenance

Undertake scheduled servicing of heat pumps, AHUs and MHRV systems, including checking heat exchangers, filters and strainers; system pressures, temperatures and flow rates; pumps, sensors and controls; compressor and fan operation; electrical components within the technician’s competence; alarms and historical data; remote monitoring; heat-recovery sections; dampers and actuators; heating and cooling coils; CO₂ and pressure sensors; condensate drainage; and BMS communication.

The technician should also identify opportunities to improve system performance, efficiency and reliability.

Fault Finding & Diagnostics

The successful candidate should have a strong interest in technical problem solving and be comfortable investigating heating/cooling performance, hydraulic and flow faults, pumping problems, pressure/temperature issues, sensor faults, electrical and controls faults, BMS/communication problems, incorrect configuration, DHW and defrost issues, ventilation airflow problems, fan/damper/actuator faults, AHU temperature-control issues, heat-recovery performance and CO₂/demand-control issues.

A key part of the role will be identifying whether a fault originates within the equipment or elsewhere in the building-services installation.

Candidate Profile

Suitable candidates may come from backgrounds including HVAC Service Technician, Heat Pump Technician, AHU/Ventilation Technician, Refrigeration Technician, Mechanical Services Technician, Plumbing/Heating Technician with controls experience, Commissioning Technician, Building Services Technician, or Controls/BMS Technician with HVAC knowledge.

Experience across every area is not required. Product-specific and system-specific training will be provided.

  • Full driving licence.

Preferred Experience

Experience in heat pumps, commercial HVAC, heat-recovery AHUs/MHRV, ventilation commissioning, commercial plant rooms, refrigeration, hydronic heating/cooling, HVAC controls, demand-controlled ventilation, BMS, BACnet, Modbus or commercial mechanical services would be advantageous.

Previous MasterTherm or specific AHU manufacturer experience is not required.

Training & Development

The successful candidate will receive ongoing technical training including MasterTherm product and factory training, commercial heat pump systems, commercial heat-recovery AHUs, heat pump and AHU controls, ventilation commissioning, R290 safety, hydraulic systems, MHRV and heat recovery, BMS/Modbus/BACnet, remote diagnostics and practical site mentoring.

As experience develops, the technician will progressively take responsibility for larger and more sophisticated commercial HVAC systems.

Career Development

Potential progression includes:

Senior Service & Commissioning Technician → Commissioning Engineer → Senior Technical Support Engineer → Service / Commissioning Manager

Progression into specialist controls, ventilation, system design or commercial HVAC engineering roles may also be available.

Summary

We are looking for a technically capable HVAC Service & Commissioning Technician who can act as the link between MasterTherm’s technical design team and the M&E contractors installing our systems.

The role combines installation support, commissioning of commercial heat pumps and heat-recovery ventilation systems, handover, servicing, remote diagnostics, technical support and fault finding.

The ideal candidate will combine practical HVAC experience, strong problem-solving ability, an interest in controls and a desire to develop their knowledge across complete low-carbon HVAC systems.
