MasterTherm Ireland is seeking a Commercial HVAC Design Consultant to join our growing technical and commercial team.

This is not a traditional sales position. The role is intended for a Mechanical or Building Services Engineer who wants to develop a career specialising in modern low-carbon HVAC systems, including commercial heat pump plant rooms, heating and cooling systems, AHU/MHRV ventilation systems, heat recovery, controls and associated building services.

The successful candidate will work closely with consulting engineers, mechanical contractors, energy consultants, architects and clients during the early design and specification stages of commercial projects.

The objective of the role is to help develop technically correct HVAC solutions and assist design teams in incorporating these solutions into project specifications, drawings and tender documentation.

We are particularly interested in an engineer who is still developing their career and is interested in continuous technical education, professional development and becoming a specialist in heat pump and low-carbon building-services design.

  • Experience within a Building Services Consultancy would be particularly advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

The role will include:

  • Working with consulting engineers and design teams during concept and detailed design stages of commercial HVAC projects.
  • Reviewing building heat-loss, cooling-load and ventilation requirements.
  • Developing preliminary HVAC concepts based around commercial heat pump technology.
  • Assisting with the design of heat pump plant rooms including:
    • heat pump cascades;
    • buffer vessels and hydraulic separation;
    • primary and secondary pumping arrangements;
    • weather-compensated heating circuits;
    • high- and low-temperature heating systems;
    • cooling systems;
    • DHW generation;
    • bivalent and hybrid heat pump/boiler systems;
    • heat recovery systems.
  • Supporting the selection and application of commercial air-to-water and water-to-water heat pumps.
  • Assisting with the design and specification of AHU, MHRV and heat-recovery ventilation systems.
  • Reviewing ventilation requirements, airflow rates, heat recovery, heating and cooling coils and demand-controlled ventilation strategies.
  • Developing plant-room schematics and assisting consultants with project-specific mechanical specifications.
  • Reviewing consultant drawings, schedules and tender documentation and providing technical recommendations where required.
  • Preparing equipment selections, technical submissions, performance calculations and supporting commercial quotations.
  • Working with the MasterTherm technical team to develop project-specific control strategies.
  • Supporting integration between heat pumps, HVAC systems and Building Management Systems using technologies such as BACnet and Modbus.
  • Attending design meetings with consultants, mechanical contractors and clients.
  • Undertaking site surveys where required to understand existing building-services systems and identify suitable retrofit solutions.
  • Supporting projects from initial concept through specification, tender, installation and commissioning.
  • Providing technical presentations and CPD-style support to consulting engineers and other industry professionals.
  • Developing long-term professional relationships with consultants, contractors and key clients.
  • Working closely with the Business Development, Project Management, Service and Technical teams to ensure that proposed solutions can be successfully delivered.

The Commercial Element of the Role

Although this position sits within the commercial side of the business, we do not expect the successful candidate to operate as a conventional salesperson.

The primary sales approach is consultative and specification-led.

The candidate will be expected to understand a project technically, identify the correct engineering solution and build confidence with the consultant or client through technical knowledge and engineering support.

Commercial success should therefore come from:

  • developing strong relationships with consulting engineers;
  • helping design teams solve difficult HVAC problems;
  • getting involved with projects at an early design stage;
  • producing technically credible solutions;
  • supporting the inclusion of MasterTherm and associated HVAC technologies within project specifications;
  • following projects from design through tender and contractor appointment;
  • supporting contractors with final equipment selection and commercial proposals.

Technical credibility is therefore significantly more important for this role than traditional sales experience.

Candidate ProfileEssential

The successful candidate should ideally have:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Energy Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A good fundamental understanding of heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
  • An interest in heat pumps, renewable heating and low-carbon building design.
  • The ability to understand mechanical schematics, drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to engineers, contractors and clients.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commercial awareness and the confidence to work directly with professional design teams.
  • A strong willingness to learn and develop technically.
  • A genuine interest in building a long-term career within the commercial HVAC and heat-pump sector.

Preferred Experience

Ideally the candidate will have approximately 2–5 years of relevant building-services experience, although we would consider applicants outside this range where their technical background and potential are suitable.

Experience within one of the following would be particularly valuable:

  • Building Services Consulting Engineering;
  • Mechanical HVAC design;
  • M&E contracting;
  • Energy consultancy;
  • Commercial heat-pump design;
  • Commercial ventilation/AHU design.

Previous experience preparing or reviewing:

  • heating and cooling calculations;
  • mechanical schematics;
  • plant-room designs;
  • equipment schedules;
  • mechanical specifications;
  • tender documentation;

would be advantageous.

Previous sales experience is not essential.

What This Role Is Not

This is not a high-volume, cold-calling sales role.

The successful candidate will not simply be expected to sell heat pumps from a price list.

The position is based around engineering knowledge, design support, specification development and long-term relationships with the professional building-services community.

The successful candidate should ultimately become someone whom consultants and clients contact when they need assistance designing a commercial heat-pump, ventilation or low-carbon HVAC solution.
