Leisure facility with 20 x 8 meter swimming pool, water features, changing rooms, reception area.

Technical information prior energy saving project

Leisure centre was heated by combined heat and power unit in combination with LPG boilers. Swimming pool water has been heated at 33℃

     Heating data

  • Size of the pool:  20 x 10 x 1.4 meters
  • Temperature of the pool water: 33
  • Heat source:  LPG boiler / CHP

Solution with Air source  heat pumps

New air water heat pump system was design to maximise efficiency of heat pumps yet maintain required temperatures of swimming pool water, domestic hot water and pool hall temperature. Swimming pool heat exchangers, air handling units and domestic hot water heating were optimise to work with lower heating water temperatures to maximise COP of heat pump system. Two no. condensing gas boilers were installed as a bivalent source or back up for extreme whether conditions. System is controlled by integrated “Carel” controls and also interphase with  “Cylon” building management system via Modbus. All temperatures can be controlled online on desk top, or via MasterTherm app on mobile devices.

  • Heat pump type:    3 x BA60i
  • Heating output:   105 kW
  • SCOP:  4.4

Predicted 70% heating cost savings. Heat pump system has separate electricity meter to calculate running costs.
