Askeaton Swimming Pool

Project Overview

The energy upgrade at Askeaton Swimming Pool in Co. Limerick was part of a strategic move to reduce operational carbon emissions and improve system efficiency across the entire facility. With a wide variety of heating needs—including pool water, domestic hot water (DHW), space heating, and ventilation—the project required a robust, scalable solution powered entirely by renewable energy.

Scope of Works

  • Supply and commissioning of:
    • 6 × MasterTherm BA60i inverter-driven air-to-water heat pumps
    • 2 × MasterTherm AQ60ZHX high-temperature heat pumps
  • Integrated systems designed to handle:
    • Space heating via LTHW circuits
    • Pool water heating for three zones
    • DHW for changing rooms and staff areas
    • Heating of three Dantherm AHU coils for air distribution and dehumidification

System Description

  • The six BA60i units form the core of the LTHW system, providing dynamic, zoned heating across the facility:
    • Space heating throughout public and back-of-house areas
    • Heating for three Dantherm AHU coils, ensuring comfortable, regulated air temperatures in poolside and spectator zones
  • The two AQ60ZHX high-temperature units are responsible for:
    • Supplying domestic hot water to showers, restrooms, and cleaning areas
    • Heating three Bowman titanium heat exchangers, each dedicated to:
      • The main swimming pool
      • The learner pool
      • The spa and hydrotherapy area
  • All equipment is fully integrated into a centralised MasterTherm control system, offering:
    • Real-time monitoring and analytics
    • Remote adjustments and scheduling
    • Load-balancing between units for optimal efficiency

Project Results & Benefits

  • Versatile, multi-use system: A single integrated system manages diverse heating requirements across water, air, and building zones
  • Precise thermal control: Each pool zone is individually regulated to meet specific temperature and hygiene standards
  • Improved air quality and comfort: AHU coil heating maintains a consistent, warm indoor climate while controlling humidity in pool areas
  • Lower operational costs: High-efficiency inverter heat pumps and intelligent controls work together to minimise energy consumption
  • Long-term sustainability: The move away from fossil fuels future-proofs the facility and supports local government energy goals
  • The installation at Askeaton Swimming Pool demonstrates how even the most complex public leisure facilities can be powered efficiently by smart, all-electric renewable energy systems. The project showcases the adaptability and reliability of MasterTherm heat pumps across demanding, high-use environments—setting a strong example for sustainable municipal infrastructure.
