Scoil Mhuire – Abbeyleix
A comprehensive deep retrofit of Scoil Mhuire in Abbeyleix has transformed the school, elevating its Building Energy Rating (BER) to an impressive B2, aligning with Ireland’s national energy efficiency targets.
Prior to the retrofit, the primary school was described by Principal Margaret Slevin as dark, damp, and perpetually cold, with visible mould and spores causing ongoing concerns. The lack of warmth not only made the learning environment uncomfortable for students but also created challenges for staff, resulting in a less-than-ideal atmosphere for education.
Retrofit Overview
The project involved a full overhaul of both the fabric and mechanical systems of the building, with significant improvements made to the school’s thermal performance, comfort levels, and energy efficiency.
Fabric Upgrades:
- Wall Insulation: Pumped cavity wall insulation, complemented by external wall insulation, to enhance thermal retention.
- Roof Insulation: A new insulated roof covering was installed to reduce heat loss from above.
- Windows and Doors: The replacement of all doors and windows with high-performance, energy-efficient models.
- Airtightness: Significant improvements to airtightness were achieved, reducing drafts and energy leakage.
Mechanical Upgrades:
- Heating System: Installation of two 35kW air source heat pumps, delivering 95% of the building’s heating needs and 100% of domestic hot water (DHW) requirements. This system was paired with new radiators and individual room thermostats, providing optimal temperature control throughout.
- Building Management System (BMS): A modern BMS was implemented, allowing for enhanced control and monitoring of the heating and ventilation systems.
- Ventilation: Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery units was installed, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh, filtered air while recovering heat to minimise energy wastage.
- Lighting: All existing light fittings were replaced with energy-efficient LEDs, further reducing energy consumption, and improved control systems were put in place.
Sustainability Features:
- Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels: A new solar PV system was installed to harness renewable energy, reducing reliance on external electricity sources.
- Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Points: The installation of EV charging stations supports the school’s commitment to sustainability and future-proofs the facility for evolving transport needs.
Results:
- Estimated Carbon Reduction: 77% reduction in CO2 emissions.
- Annual Energy Savings: An impressive estimated energy saving of 93,000 kWh per annum, contributing to both financial savings and environmental benefits.
Through this retrofit, Scoil Mhuire is now a shining example of energy-efficient modernisation, providing a brighter, warmer, and healthier environment for both students and staff.
