Killarney Park Leisure Centre
Scope of Works
- 3 × MasterTherm BA60i inverter heat pumps serving the indoor swimming pool and its dedicated Air Handling Unit (AHU)
- 1 × MasterTherm BA60i supplying domestic hot water (DHW) and space heating for the spa and wellness areas
The System was Designed to:
- Maintain precise temperature control in the pool and surrounding areas
- Deliver continuous DHW supply for showers, changing rooms, and spa treatment areas
- Integrate seamlessly into the facility’s energy management system using advanced onboard MasterTherm PLC controls
System Description
- The BA60i heat pumps are designed for high-demand applications, offering modulating performance for both space and pool water heating
- The poolside AHU benefits from a steady supply of LTHW from the twin BA60i units, ensuring stable temperature and humidity control
- The DHW and spa heating system is powered by a dedicated BA60i, supporting elevated comfort levels required for therapeutic and wellness functions
- Each unit features intelligent onboard control logic, capable of managing heating circuits, valves, and temperature setpoints independently—without requiring a full BMS
Project Results & Benefits
- Tailored comfort delivery: The system was custom-engineered to meet the specific thermal demands of leisure and wellness zones, ensuring guest satisfaction at all times
- Operational resilience: The system provides dependable performance even during peak usage periods, ensuring uninterrupted service in mission-critical areas like pools and spas
- Reduced energy load: By leveraging high-efficiency inverter-driven heat pumps, the facility has significantly lowered its energy consumption compared to legacy systems
- Smart control, simplified management: Advanced PLC functionality allows real-time monitoring and adjustment, empowering facility staff to maintain ideal conditions with minimal input
- Environmental stewardship: The move away from fossil fuels supports the hotel’s broader sustainability objectives, improving its green credentials and lowering its carbon footprint
Tech Notes & Smart Control
- Pool AHU supplied by dedicated BA60i pair for humidity/temperature stability; separate BA60i covers spa/DHW.
- PLC logic supervises valve groups, recirculation loops and optimum‑start for morning ramp‑up.
Guest Experience & Operations
- Spa comfort maintained even during pool peaks; quieter plant enhances wellness areas.
Energy & Carbon (SEAI)
- Switching from fossil-fired plant to high-efficiency heat pumps reduces on‑site combustion (Scope 1) and cuts overall CO₂ per guest‑night.
- Heat recovery (where fitted) further lowers electrical input per kWh of useful heat or DHW.
- Aligned with SEAI guidance for decarbonising hospitality; suitable for EXEED‑style M&V and public‑sector style reporting where applicable.
- Benefits grow as the Irish electricity grid continues to decarbonise, improving the carbon intensity of delivered heat over time.
