Water-to-Water Heat Pump

The principle of a water-to-water heat pump

Surface or groundwater is a natural source for a water heat pump system. We take water from the source (usually from a well), let it pass through a heat pump exchanger (evaporator), which extracts some of the heat from it and then return it to the ground by another (infiltration) well. The distance between the boreholes should be at least 10 m, preferably in the direction of the underground streams source -> infiltration well.

This is the most efficient type of heat pump.  Groundwater has a constant average temperature of approx. 10 ° C, which does not change with temperature changes on the surface. So it is the ‘hottest’ source of energy. The heating factor is therefore around 6, which means that a water-to-water heat pump can save you up to 80%.

A sufficiently rich source of natural water must be provided for the heat pump. For a normal family house, a flow rate of 0.5 l / s is required.

However, it is necessary to perform a hydrogeological assessment of well yield using a pumping test. Water is pumped out of the well at the required speed for 14 days using a submersible pump. If the well is not depleted and the level of adjacent wells is not affected, the installation of this system is feasible. On the basis of the performed pumping test, a permit for the use of groundwater is issued.

This type of natural source again uses the heat of water. Compared to the previous system, however, it has the disadvantage that the water temperature is lower than 5 ° C for a long time, which makes it impossible to cool it directly. Therefore, a heat exchanger system (PE hoses) is used, which is placed in the riverbed or on the bottom of a large body of water. The heat exchanger system is filled with antifreeze.

Such use must be permitted by the Stream Administrator, which is usually the River Basin District to which the given watercourse belongs, or the Reclamation Administration or the Municipal Office. This system is not very common, but it is an excellent source of energy. However, the use of running water requires an accurate calculation of the size of the exchanger for each case separately.

Key factors influencing your savings

The basic three factors affect how much you save with a heat pump

technology inverter

1. Heat pump lifespan

Heat pump systems must be correctly commissioned according to the heat loss of the building. MasterTherm’s online control system in combination with the latest parts and components from leading manufacturers, installed in a robust and practical design, allows us to offer a 7-year warranty on all parts of the heat pump. Last but not least, professional assembly by certified professionals, proactive routine maintenance and the availability of spare parts from the European production plan is essential.

2. Efficiency or heating factor (COP)

The higher the temperature at the heat pump inlet and the lower the temperature at the heat pump outlet, the higher the efficiency. To increase efficiency, we supply a desuperheater, ie a device integrated in a heat pump, designed for efficient hot water heating. Hot water is heated while the compressor is running, as a “by-product” of the building’s heating.

3. System solution

MasterTherm heat pumps are designed and equipped as a heating system, not only as a heat source. There is no need to buy expensive additional components, as everything you need is included in the price of the equipment, in a functional unit. Reliable installation by accredited installers ensures all heat pump solutions are optimised on site for the client.

Save up to 70% on energy

Inverter technology with state-of-the-art BLDC compressors and electronic injection takes the heat pump’s performance and efficiency a few steps further. This system is a typical MasterTherm system: quiet, reliable, with cutting-edge technology for efficient heating and with a sophisticated control system.
