Ground-to-Water Heat Pump

The principle of a ground-to-water heat pump

In a plastic pipe, several hundred meters long (ground collector), the antifreeze mixture circulates and “heats” by a few degrees Celsius as it passes through the ground (at a non-freezing depth, the constant temperature is approx. 4 ° C). It then travels to the heat pump exchanger (evaporator), where it is cooled, ie the heat gain is removed and the cooled mixture is returned to the collector for reheating. This cycle is constantly repeated.

Stable heating output

Long service life

Savings of up to 70%

Very quiet operation

Higher investment costs (well)

Earthworks (area collector)

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to our questions on ground – water heat pumps

The size of the land needed to build the source depends on the performance of the heat pump and the properties of the soil. The higher its humidity, the greater the energy yield.

Generally speaking, you need approx. 30m² of land.

This has the advantage that it requires almost no land, but drilling makes it the most expensive variant of a heat pump. It is a ground heat exchanger in the shape of a double U, which is located in a ground borehole.

The maximum depth of one well is 100m. If more energy needs to be provided for the heat pump, heat is removed from more boreholes. For 1kW of heat pump power you need approx. 12m well.

For water / water and ground / water heat pumps, the general rule in our climatic and economic conditions is to install the heat pump output at approx. 70% of the building’s heat loss. The rest of the heat losses at the lowest temperatures (it is only a few days of the heating season) is covered by an additional – bivalent heat source, most often an electric boiler.

Installing the heat pump output at 100% heat loss would bring a substantial increase in investment costs, which would bring almost no further savings in operating costs . It is therefore an ideal compromise between investment and operating costs.

Key factors influencing your savings

The basic three factors affect how much you save with a heat pump

technology inverter

1. Heat pump lifespan

Heat pump systems must be correctly commissioned according to the heat loss of the building. MasterTherm’s online control system in combination with the latest parts and components from leading manufacturers, installed in a robust and practical design, allows us to offer a 7-year warranty on all parts of the heat pump. Last but not least, professional assembly by certified professionals, proactive routine maintenance and the availability of spare parts from the European production plan is essential.

technology desuperheater

2. Efficiency or heating factor (COP)

The higher the temperature at the heat pump inlet and the lower the temperature at the heat pump outlet, the higher the efficiency. To increase efficiency, we supply a desuperheater, ie a device integrated in a heat pump, designed for efficient hot water heating. Hot water is heated while the compressor is running, as a “by-product” of the building’s heating.

technology regulation

3. System solution

MasterTherm heat pumps are designed and equipped as a heating system, not only as a heat source. There is no need to buy expensive additional components, as everything you need is included in the price of the equipment, in a functional unit. Reliable installation by accredited installers ensures all heat pump solutions are optimised on site for the client.
